A conundrum... I struggle with writing a review where the difference between the evening meal (1 star) and breakfast (5 stars) was so divergent. And the hotel room was well-equipped, small (but as advertised), yet comfortable. Let's start with dinner, dining with another couple. We chose the three course prix fix - all pureed blobs and unappetizing - not what we were expecting from the menu descriptions. Why would anyone have an entire meal of pureed food lightly smeared across the plate. Tiny portions, so much so that we were all hungry at the end, wishing there had have been more substantial choices on offer. I felt worse that the couple we were with paid for this expensive yet less than mediocre meal. The service was beyond slow but no fault of the young servers who were run off their feet - there simply weren't enough of them for the number of diners (only two servers for the entire room). So it was with trepidation that we ventured down to breakfast the following morning. You wouldn't know it was the same restaurant or kitchen! The breakfast was delicious, plenty of yummy and well prepared choices. Well fed and satisfied, we made our way to the next stop on our vacation.

I have been visiting The Old Bell in Malmesbury for several years, usually for lunch and afternoon tea, as I live locally. The decor is the opposite of the blandness found in chain hotels. The staff are always very pleasant and professional and the food is invariably excellent. What is the same as in chain hotels is the intrusive Musak which makes conversation difficult. It was very disappointing to be told by the (newish) owners’ son that he could not lower the volume because “it served the whole hotel”. Ergo, the customers in the whole hotel had to suffer. Such a pity that an otherwise excellent experience was spoiled by his inflexibility.

Great hotel with beautiful rooms, rustic feel. I have added pics of single and double room. Very quirky. The dining room had an hand painted mural on the ceiling. Friendly and polite staff. Very helpful. Definitely, would return.

We visited today for afternoon tea as part of our anniversary celebration. This was our first visit, and I don't think it will be our last. As soon as we stepped through the door, all the staff were polite, courteous, and helpful. I must say the staff were predominantly young and it was a refreshing change that they were all so helpful and professional. I hate to be ageist, but sadly, a lot of places the younger staff just stare at the floor, not here though, lots of smiles and eye contact with efficient service. Everywhere was clean and tidy and obviously loved and cared for! The afternoon tea itself didn't disappoint. Everything was really delicious and the teas were fab, so much so I bought some to take home! Thank you to everyone today. We were really impressed! Great way to start the new year! Highly recommended

A beautiful venue for a quick drink, relaxing evening, or a large party. They have a wide selection of wines, and cocktails for a memorable evening. The staff are friendly, thoughtful and happy to help.

We have just returned from The Old Bell in Malmesbury, after a spectacular over night stay and party for Mum’s 70th Birthday. We booked 10 Cozy Rooms and rented the Garden Room for a party of 21 adults. The communication with Events Manager Emily leading up to the event was EXCELLENT, she and Sydney were very attentive and absolutely impeccable. The food was incredible in the evening, my brother said this morning, his full English breakfast was simply the BEST he has ever had and we all agreed. I have spend my whole career in Senior Leadership roles in the hospitality industry internationally and in the UK and it was a joy to still be utterly delighted. Every little detail had been thought through and delivered beautifully. Culturally they have clearly got it right. Team members were warm, welcoming and ooozzzzed professionalism. Even team members who are not directly on the front line. The presence of leadership did not go unnoticed. The General Manager was present several times, which is also a pleasure to see. There was also a hand written note from the GM in our room on arrival. We have been quite disillusioned recently, we felt the hospitality industry (post COVID) had lost its way. The ambience and interior design was simply gorgeous. Anyone running hotels in this country should book a night at this beautiful hotel, it is an example for the industry. OUTSTANDING

Went in to have a drink and warm up from the cold. Ordered 2 mulled wines and ended up being charged 28 pounds (14 each). What an absolute rip off. 0/10 for the experience- the justification was “it’s a cocktail” which is absolutely nonsense. They had to turn the warmer on when we got there and put 1 stick of cinnamon and a slice of orange and have the audacity to say it’s a cocktail. The most expensive mulled wine I’ve ever bought. We are locals to the area and will NOT be coming back which is unfortunate as we were looking forward to trying this place out.. Avoid this place unless you like being overcharged. I

So we went to the restaurant at the back of the hotel. Wow what a beautiful place with the oak settings. The food was burnt. Well most of it anyway. I was starving so it was good for me but the rest were not as hungry. Poor poor and very poor is what i would call this. Been going to the Bell for 40 years or more... Mmmmmm and i would've expected better. A lot better!!!! Poor, really shocked actually 😕

This would have been an overall 5 star rating except it was let down by the room, it was very small but the deal breaker for me was the fact it had no bath !! The room description said there was one ,it was a huge disappointment to find there wasn't.

Tiny bathroom. Not easy to get in and out of bath. Shower water goes from v. Hot to cold. Ridiculously large tv in small bedroom. Complex kettle difficult to operate. Teabags were horrible. Comfortable big bed. Slept well.No drawers to put clothes away. Actual hotel was beautiful just let down by accommodation side therefore not good value for money.

The Old Bell location is second to none and it is sumptuously decorated. We loved our visit though the lunch (crab tempura burger) was a bit weird!

My stay was not brilliant went there a few months ago night porter called Robbie was very rude to me and my partner also one of the guests were very rude she was an old lady with a zimmer frame she could do with having a good wash you don't expect to see that sort of person in a lively establishment like this most of the other staff was perfectly ok and also the guests I won't be staying there for a while

What an enchanting hotel. Atmospheric, beautifully decorated. The staff were lovely and the food was excellent, well judged portions and full of flavour. We will definitely come back with our four legged friends.
